There are HEARTBREAKING statistics that show that only 17% of children above the age of 8 are being read aloud to at home. Parents think their child can read independently, so they stop reading to them. Statistics also show that around the same age, children's interest in reading diminishes drastically. Coincidence? I think not. If I could get parents and teachers to change one thing about their interactions with their children and students it would be this: NEVER stop reading aloud to them. Don't stop.
