The Ultimate Read Aloud List
There are HEARTBREAKING statistics that show that only 17% of children above the age of 8 are being read aloud to at home. Parents think their child can read independently, so they stop reading to them. Statistics also show that around the same age, children's interest in reading diminishes drastically. Coincidence? I think not. If I could get parents and teachers to change one thing about their interactions with their children and students it would be this: NEVER stop reading aloud to them. Don't stop. Don't let their age, or the type of book, or the setting let you stop reading aloud. If you're a parent or teacher and don't know how to start, I'm here to help. I vividly remember my mom sitting against the wall between my bedroom and my brothers bedroom and reading chapter books to us every night as kids. I know it's why I am the reader I am today. Teachers, I'm looking at you, too. Read with your students every. single. day. The most powerful teaching opportunities you will have will come from reading stories together. Remember you are growing brains, but you are growing good, kind, conscious, fair humans as well. Below is the ultimate read aloud list--books that will ignite thoughtful conversation, imagination, relationships, or giggles.
“We read with our children because it gives both them and us an education of the heart and mind. Of intellect and empathy. We read together and learn because stories teach us how to love.” --The Read Aloud Family

“When read-aloud time doesn’t look like we originally hoped, we begin to doubt that it’s giving us any of those wonderful benefits. But here’s the thing: it still works. Even when it’s noisy, messy, and more chaotic than you’d like it to be, it works. Even when kids are grumbling, complaining, and don’t seem to be listening, it works.” --The Read Aloud Family
