I never expected my attachment to a fictional robot living on a island to bring me to tears multiple times! I read The Wild Robot to my third grade class and we fell in love with Roz immediately. It's a futuristic Robot vs. Wild scenario. Roz learns what everyone else's purpose is, but spends her life trying to find her own purpose. She is a monster on the island--but her motherly instinct, loyalty, kindness, determination, and sense of community turn her into a friend and leader. It is an incredible heart warming adventure!! I cannot say enough good about it. Bonus: The illustrations are INCREDIBLE!
“I'll tell you what: If I could do it all over again, I'd spend more time helping others. All I've ever done is dig tunnels. Some of them were real beauties too, but they're all hidden underground, where they're no good to anyone but me.”
Synopsis
Can a robot survive in the wilderness?
When robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is alone on a remote, wild island. She has no idea how she got there or what her purpose is--but she knows she needs to survive. After battling a fierce storm and escaping a vicious bear attack, she realizes that her only hope for survival is to adapt to her surroundings and learn from the island's unwelcoming animal inhabitants.
As Roz slowly befriends the animals, the island starts to feel like home--until, one day, the robot's mysterious past comes back to haunt her.
